His new show, which he called “Old Time Rock, would be diverse in the way it was presented.

The usual playlists that are the venue mark of the Oldies AM radio stations were out the window. His own collection of 12,000 tunes would be digitized onto his PC to lay the groundwork for the show. Then he’d have a spotlight for each show, Novelties on one, doo wops on another, rockabilly on yet another. Each one with a dose of rock history and reminiscing.

He researches each singer and each song to offer background for each show. So in November he went on the air on talkshoe.com. The first week he’d 8 listeners. Clearly, his companions had at least listened. By the third week he managed 80 listeners, still quite a jump. Still, he has been un prepared for the next week when out of nowhere 800 people listened in.

Since then with advertising on a few classified web site s, the show has continued to grow and grow, breaking all types of records on the Web and the web site itself.

Where does he go from here? His plans are to as he puts it, “take it the next level.”

He says he’d like to garner an even larger listeners and eventually try his hand at bringing some live oldies and doo wop shows around the country. But that is a long way off.

His focus is to make Old Time Rock n Roll n Roll even bigger and better with each passing week. With his success likewise means success to his pod casting network called Talkshoe.com. Douglas predicts that Talkshoe will be the biggest thing in podcasting in 2007 and beyond.

New bands looking to book performances and create contacts a lot of the time start looking for a manager to handle the business aspects of their music. This is just the case in cities with big music scenes, like New York, Los Angeles and Austin.

Before diving into such a relationship, however, musicians ought to contemplate the pros and cons. Bands might determine that they do not need a manager. On the other hand, few performers might exist without any management. Realistically, the option again and again lies betwixt employing an outside manager and taking on certain vital responsibilities yourself.

The central advantage of employing a manager is that it allows musicians to focus on the creative aspects of the music, in the absence of being distracted or burdened by business details. At times, when creative people take on business responsibilities, their outlook on the creative process might differ as a result.

For example, If the guitar player takes on promotional responsibilities, he could start infusing his newfound marketing drive into the song-writing process, and try to manufacturer a “ extensive hit” to win the favor of industry executives. Depending on the band’s goals, this could or could not be a positive development.

The main disadvantage of engaging an outside manager is that it will cost money. Typically, manager will charge somewhere in the neighborhood of 15  percent of re Venues. Musicians ought to make sure that a manager only charges fees on re Venue he or she has personal ly generated. If performers can handle most managerial facets themselves – booking shows, keeping track of money, ordering merchandise – they can decide against engaging a manager.

Alternatively, you might pick to take on some of these responsibilities, while employing a manager to handle other responsibilities. In this case, you might try to negotiate a reduce management fee. Generally speaking, artists ought to pay for a manager If they’re “profiting” from the relationship.

Musicians who handle their own affairs get a amazing sense of satisfaction from booking their own gigs. Additionally,  it’s important to obtain a ground-level understanding of how the music business works. In a lot of cases, performers handle their own affairs until they reach a certain level of success, and then look for a professional manager. However, in deciding whether or not to hire a manager, performers should think realistically about how self-motivated and responsible they are.

Blues Revivals, Pop Music Influences

Every few years a person rediscovers the blues. Pop music, that stuff you hear on the majority commercial radio stations, is a business. The idea is to make lots of resources by selling music like it has been toothpaste. You find something everybody likes and then have competitive products that are a little divergent but all standard ally do the same thing and even though they taste a little divergent not enough divergent to bother anyone. That’s pop music.

Now and again the public gets pretty tired of the same old stuff and pop music needs a little kick in the pants. Rediscovering some old form of American music most people have forgotten about and bring it out as the next new thing frequently does the trick. It might be Country or Jazz or Bluegrass, but quite frequently it is the Blues.

The difference between pop music and genre music prefer the Blues is that there is a much smaller listeners for the genre music, but that listeners is always incredibly loyal, keeping it going while others ignore it. Blues, being the incredibly root of all roots music, is an clear option to obtain inspiration from when things are getting a little stale and it is always there in the background just waiting to be found.

In the 1st half of the twentieth century much of the most popular music has been Blues based or at least heavily influenced by it. From Big performer Swing to Jazz to even Country music, Blues played an necessary part in their developments.

There were many so-called “Blues Revivals” in the last half of the twentieth century. The most recent large one has been in the mid 1980′s when there has been a sudden explosion of new Blues societies and festivals all around the U.S.. When these revivals happen it generally means that the loyal fan base of the music is greater by the addition of people who come from other genres who grow to see similarities betwixt what they like and the Blues. generally times it’s these new folks who determine the direction the music will take in order for it to reach a expansive er fans.

The most famous example of this has been the birth of Rock n Roll and Roll. By the mid 1950′s Blues music had lost much of its original black fans, which had moved on to R&B and early Soul. What seemed like something new has been just a mixing bag of styles taken from Country, Swing, and mostly from Jump Blues and R& B. This is pretty much how all new musical styles come about. When you mix up a bunch of stuff in a pot and cook it awhile, the soup you end up with has tastes from all its ingredients, but there is always one flavor that stands out. Blues is ofttimes that rich flavor.

In the late 1950′s and early 1960′s another less undeniable revival took place with the popularity of Folk Music. This is an regularly neglected but particularly necessary revival because it was a time of rediscovery and reconnection with the old guard Blues artists. Young Folk performers were the ones who researched the old country Blues and actually sought out and re located a lot of of the old Blues performers. They learned from those originators, wrote about them, got them performing again, and taught others what they had learned through books, tapes, and nowadays videos. They truly “Kept the Blues alive” in every sense of the words.

In the mid 1960′s Blues made an even greater impact on Pop Music when both American and British artists discovered the power of electric Blues through second generation Bluesmen such as Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf. Rock and Roll and Roll became just Rock and Roll when lead guitar styles based on Blues improvisations came to the forefront. The Blues this time was the grittier sounding Delta style. Rock and Roll became harder sounding with Blues as it is base. That has never gone away.

There was another small Blues revival at the end of the 1970′s when the Blues Brothers made Blues hip again. That revival created careers for some new young players and brought some of the old Blues guys back out on the road. It was the availability of all these varied acts that made the revival of the mid 1980′s possible.

Blues has always been a bit of a secret ingredient in pop music and even pop culture. It is used to revive careers and sell blue jeans. Every once in awhile it gets pretty cool again. Unfortunately, since something being cool is a short-term state of mind, Blues music has again begun to drift into the type of music status with a diminishing fans. Though there are still many Blues Festivals, they tend to lean toward Rock n Roll Blues, leaving the true Blues lover longing for another shot of more traditional stuff. Don’t worry, Blues never really goes away. It’ll be back.

Hip-hop took birth as American street culture. Hip-hop culture emerged from 1970s block gatherings (large outdoor gatherings, thrown by owners of expensive stereo equipment) in NY City, just South Bronx. Pioneered by Black Americans, it includes rap music, break dancing, ‘b-boy’ fashion, and a defiant stance.

Amid predictions it would not outlive a season, hip-hop music managed to produce its own race. Anyone who dismisses Hip-hop as rap music does not understand its history and the influence hip-hop has on youth culture. True listeners appreciate that hip-hop is not just about music; it’s a way of life, a language, and a unique perspective that uses music to address racism, oppression, and poverty issues, and transforms the music into a political movement. The aim is to motivate young adults to get active in ways reminiscent of the civil rights movement. Hip-hop narrates the stories of inner city African-Americans trying to live the American dream from the bottom up. It is about the youth culture of New York City taking over the world someday—about dance, art, hurt, love, racial discrimination, broken homes, overcoming adversity, and fulfillment.

Hip-hop includes four key forms of expression: mixing (combining sounds using turntables or other sources), “b-boying” (dancing), graffiti art, and emceeing (a individual who might control the crowd with his lyrics). This culture manifested itself throughout New York(NY) City around the mid-1970s. There’s a message passed down from the godfathers of hip-hop: to earn respect, you must be skilled on the mic, possess the ability to rock a crowd with sheer lyricism, and explain why you were better than the man next door.

Hip-hop has had a meaningful influence on a few genres of music. Rythm & Blues, in particular, has been the the majority influenced as to necessitate a sub genre. The key difference has been that the sub genre has been coarse and contained less of an Rythm & Blues influence.

Pop and R&B singers, including Mariah Carey and Destiny’s Child, appropriated hip-hop in order to relate to young, urban listeners s, thus creating a sub type of coined “”hip-hop Soul”". This type of features hip-hop backbeats, superimposed with vocals that were sung in the style of soul music; the lyrics, however, integrated street lingo and adult themes.

Impudence characterizes the styling of hip-hop soul. The hitherto conventional singers sported tattoos, wore leather, and wore a defiant look in the vein of hip-hop musicians. Pop singers, who were reluctant to differ their images, began collaborating with a rapper to remix one of their tracks, and in company d the remix in their albums. The remixes were pegged as singles, and allowed the singers to retain their signature styles.

The remixed tracks soon became all the rage, and hip-hop soul crossed racial divides, earning its artists mainstream recognition. Veteran Rythm & Blues artists additionally generated interest among young, contemporary listenerss through their association with hip-hop. Patti LaBelle has performed with Outkast; Chaka Khan granted permission to Kanye West to re-mix her tracks. By joining forces with hip-hop artists, Rythm & Blues singers thus reached out to a new age group.

Hip-hop
soul is considered more mature than contemporary R&B, and targets an adult audiences. This is primarily due to the type of’s focus on the seamier facets of life; hip-hop soul singers furthermore use adult language and themes, which has drawn censure from individuals who feel the genre of music, similar to hip-hop, glorifies negative stereotypes.

Although hip-hop soul witnessed a dull period with the emergence of Neo Soul, another R&B sub type of in the late 90s, it is now experiencing a surge in popularity due to singers like Jaheim, Amerie, Keyshia Cole, and Anthony Hamilton.

Hip-hop music is the vehicle of hip-hop culture and contains “rapping” (superimposed with vocals) by emcees. Owing to this, hip-hop music is on occasion referred to as “rap music,” Nonetheless, those who dismiss hip-hop as rap music do not comprehend its rich history and the influence this type of music has on youth culture.

Hip-hop music is a vehicle used by the singers to address racism, oppression, and poverty issues. It narrates tales of inner city African-Americans living the American dream (through hard work, courage and determination one might achieve prosperity) from the bottom up, and bitterly touches upon racial discrimination, broken homes, and overcoming adversity.

Invented by Jamaican migrant disc jockey Kool Herc in the early 70s in New York(NY) City, it has since then spread its tentacles across the world. Herc shifted from reggae records to funk, rock and disco. Owing to the short percussive breaks, he began extending them using an audio mixer and two records. As the unique style of music became a hit, performers (emcees) began superimposing the music with vocals; initially, they introduced themselves and others in the fans. Later, the rapping became more diverse, incorporating brief rhymes, regularly with a sexual or violent theme, in an attempt to entertain the fans.

In the mid-1970s, hip-hop split into two groups. One focused on getting the crowd dancing, another highlighted rapid-fire rhymes. The 1980s witnessed further diversification in hip-hop; highly metaphoric lyrics rapping over multi-layered beats replaced simple vocals. In the 90s, gangsta rap (glorified outlaw lifestyle) became mainstream. Hip-hop has been soon an integral part of mainstream music, and nearly all the pop songs featured an underlying element of hip-hop.

In the 90s and into the following decade, elements of hip-hop were integrated into diverse type ofs of music: hip-hop soul combined hip-hop and soul music; in the Dominican Republic, a recording by Santi Y Sus Duendes and Lisa M has been coined “Meren-rap,” a fusion of hip-hop and meringue. In Europe, Africa, and Asia, hip-hop has undergone a transition from an underground occurrence to the mainstream market.

Oldies Music – Definitions And History

The term, “oldies,” refers to both popular music from the 1950s-1970s and the radio format that specializes in this type of music. “Golden oldies” oftentimes refers to oldies music exclusively from the 1950s-early 1960s. Oldies tunes are typically from the R&B, pop and rock music type ofs but may also include country, movie soundtrack, novelty, and other categories of popular music played on the radio from around 1950-on. Pop music type ofs that had their heyday before the 1950s (e.g., ragtime, big band) are generally thought to be “too old” to be included in the oldies radio format. Oldies music radio stations, which typically feature artists and performers such as (to name several ) Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Little Richard, Pat Boone, Sam Cooke, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, the Rascals, the Association, the Temptations, the Who, Elton John, and Fleetwood Mac, cover a broad  variety of styles including early rock and roll, rockabilly, doo-wop, surf rock, girl groups, the British Invasion, folk rock, psychedelic rock, baroque pop, soul music, Motown, and bubblegum pop. Oldies music also overlaps with classic rock which focuses on the rock music of the late 1960s and 1970s as well as newer music in a similar style.

The phrase, “oldies but nice ies,” was 1st coined in 1957 by renowned disc jockey Art Laboe who, at around that time, used to get frequent requests from his fans for tunes from the early 1950s. A central figure in L.A. radio for over half a century, Laboe was the 1st disc jockey to play rock and roll on the West Coast and one of the 1st to play black and white musicians on the same show. In 1959, he put together the 1st LP to feature (mostly older) tunes by divergent musicians. This immensely popular compilation album, entitled “Oldies But Goodies,” stayed on Billboard’s Top 100 LP’s chart for over three years and has, to date, spawned some 14 sequels. (Click here for a recent interview with Art Laboe.)

Soon after the release of Laboe’s first “Oldies But Goodies” album, the phrase, “oldies but nice ies,” became commonplace and by around 1960, people were waxing nostalgic for 1950s doo-wop which was already starting to be classified as “oldies.” Little Caesar And The Romans’ 1961 hit, “Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me of You)” and its sequel, “Memories of Those Oldies But Goodies,” both pay homage to early doo-wop and doo-wop musicians. This wave of nostalgia brought about a doo-wop revival in the early 1960s which was the first of a lot of nostalgia movements in pop music since the term, “oldies,” was first applied to older pop music.

While “golden oldies” has remained a never ending over the years, the larger body of pop music that we still call “oldies” today – which is made up of core golden oldies tunes plus more modern material – isn’t fixed but has been gradually expanding forward in time to keep up with changing demographics. Nowadays, oldies music is generally considered to include all of the 1970s, even disco, and the same is expected to be true someday for the music of the 1980s, now a number of times described as “retro.” Oldies music is additionally expanding in breadth as thousands of long-forgotten tunes from the 1950s and 1960s that never made the Top 40 in their day are being re discovered and resurrected. Whether because of nostalgia, curiosity, or a genuine love for good music, the oldies format has maintained a immense following and will could continue to do so for a lot of years to come.
